Jessica Ennis to skip European Indoor Games to recover ankle for World Championships, Olympics
World and European heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis has announced that she will skip the upcoming European Indoors event in Paris, France. The competition kicks off on March 4 and will go on March 6.
25-year-old Ennis is young and energetic with a lot of potential, but with a bruised ankle, which she injured during last months’ UK high jump trials in Sheffield. After that, she left the Avivia Grand Prix in Birmingham and is now skipping the upcoming
European Indoors in Paris.
Ennis is worried about her injury and is not willing to take any more chances lest she should skip the 2012 Olympics. She has already lost her first chance to appear in the Olympics when she missed the 2008 Olympics due an injury to her right ankle. Ennis
has decided to skip the European indoors to allow her ankle to fully recover.
According to an MRI scan, the ankle is improving and there is nothing to worry about. Ennis said her decision to skip the indoors event is to ensure complete rehabilitation.
Jessica said, “I have thought long and hard about whether to compete at the European Indoor Championships in Paris this coming Friday, and if I am really honest I don’t want to risk any further damage to my ankle and calf.”
She said she could compete in Paris with the help of medicines, but she wouldn’t take the chance. “As it is, the inflammation and fluid build-up is reducing and I could potentially get through the pentathlon with medication, but there is no guarantee that
it will not worsen as a result and then mess up the start of my outdoor season.”
Jessica Ennis will now return to the games for the World Championships in Daegu at the end of the May. “I cannot take this risk. The World Championships has to be my priority. I would like to wish the rest of the team a really successful championship,” she
said.
