Jessica Ennis vows to defend World Indoor Pentathlon title in Istanbul
Jessica Ennis, the Sheffield born 25-year-old track and field player from Great Britain has expressed her resolve to defend her World Indoor Pentathlon title in Istanbul, Turkey.
Ennis, who is a specialist for 100m hurdles and multi-event disciplines, is also the reigning European heptathlon champion.
The World Indoor Pentathlon event is planned to kick off in March 2012 and will last for three days, March 9-11.
Ennis, the former champion of the world heptathlon competitions, is a serving member of and trains at the City of Sheffield Athletics Club.
The young girl, who is also ambitious to mark an admirable performance at the London Olympics 2012, will take the Istanbul contest as a prologue to the mega athletics showdown planned to take place from end July to mid August.
The British, who claimed the limelight first in 2005 European Athletics Junior Championships, emerged as a serious world indoor championships contestant two years ago when she participated in Aspire Dome in Doha.
The memorable event observed her marking three personal bests with a total of 4937 points on the table.
The score placed by her on the board in Doha was huge. In doing so, from being an ordinary athlete, she emerged as a national record holder and the third best performer in the world.
The top two performers – Irina Belova and Swede Kluft stand a little above her for recording a total of 4991 and 4948 points, respectively.
The International Association of Athletics Federation’s (IAAF) rules for World Indoor Pentathlon defending champions are rather interesting.
As per the rules, the world athletics body will invite three of the best outdoor performers of 2011. These top athletes of the current year will have separate matches against the English performer.
The expected athletes, who can have a rematch against Ennis, are Russia’s Tatyana Chernova – the winner of the World Championships in Daegu, along with Jennifer Oeser from Germany. Between the two, Chernova is expected to give a tough time to the defending
champion.
Besides the contest in Istanbul, Ennis also has UK Indoor Championships and the Aviva Birmingham Grand Prix events on her cards.
Moreover, the bronze medal winner of the 2006 Commonwealth Games will also look forward to shine at the IAAF Combined Events Challenge in Gotzis, Austria.
