Jessica Hardy captures Women’s 50m breaststroke title – 2012 FINA Swimming World Cup, Berlin
Jessica Hardy of USA captured gold medal of the Women’s 50m breaststroke on second day of the 2012 FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup in Berlin, Germany on Sunday, October 21.
The American swimmer continued her breath-taking efforts on day two of the championship and exceeded hopes of her supporters by defending her title of the shortest breaststroke discipline.
Hardy, who finished second in the 100m freestyle earlier, showered her expertise in the playoff of 50m event. Hardy remained in a comfortable lead over her closest competitor and surfaced on the wall for the title by submitting a time of 30.13 seconds.
Her gold finish remained 0.76 seconds faster from Kathryn Johnstone of Great Britain, who followed her on the victory stand for silver medal by reporting a time of 30.89 seconds.
Johnstone was followed by Margarethe Hummel, who was only 0.20 seconds apart and proved her eligibility for third position by producing an effort of 31.09 seconds.
The third position holder was chased by Rie Kaneto of Japan, who struggled hard to secure third fastest finish but failed to match the Hummel’s pace in the concluding lap. Kaneto remained 0.25 seconds away from Hummel and surfaced on the wall as fourth best
finisher with a timing of 31.34 seconds.
Kaneto was trailed by Caroline Ruhnau, who stayed 0.04 seconds slower from her preceding swimmer and posted an effort of 31.38 seconds for fifth place.
Similarly, Ruhnau was chased by Dorothea Brandt, who was 0.09 seconds apart and clocked a time of 31.47 seconds for sixth position.
Seventh position of the race was obtained by Theresa Michalak of Germany, who suffered a loss of just 0.02 seconds from her foregoing finisher and emerged on the wall with an effort of 31.49 seconds.
Michalak was traced by Yuzhe He of China, who was 0.17 seconds apart and concluded her race in a time of 31.66 seconds.
In addition, Hardy received a huge round of applause from the audience for her notable effort and articulated that she would try to live up to the expectations of her followers by achieving the same in future competitions.
