Jessica-Jane Applegate secures Women’s 200m freestyle gold – 2012 Paralympic Games
Jessica-Jane Applegate of Great Britain secured gold medal of the Women’s 200m freestyle in S14 category on day four of the swimming events at the 2012 London Paralympic Games in Aquatics Centre on Sunday, September 2.
Applegate stayed in a comfortable lead over her opponents throughout the discipline and sprinted her way towards the finishing blockade for the title of the discipline.
The British swimmer faced tough battle from Taylor Corry of Australia in the first half of the race but with her continuous efforts, she managed to prove her mettle for gold medal.
With her commendable pace, she enjoyed a half body length lead over her strongest challenger and hit the wall with a timing of 2 minutes and 12.63 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Corry, who remained 0.55 seconds apart and stepped on the victory stand for silver medal by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 13.18 seconds.
Corry was chased by Marlou van der Kulk of Netherlands, who stayed 1.62 seconds away from her foregoing finisher and clocked a time of 2 minutes and 14.80 seconds.
The bronze medallist was followed by Kayla Clarke of Australia, who stayed 0.49 seconds apart and settled on the finishing end as fourth fastest swimmer by reporting a time of 2 minutes and 15.29 seconds.
Subsequently, fifth best spot of the event was secured by Pernilla Lindberg of Sweden, who remained 0.04 seconds slower from her former finisher and tapped the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 15.33 seconds.
Lindberg was chased by Natalie Massey of Great Britain, who suffered a loss of only 0.02 seconds and posted a time of 2 minutes and 15.35 seconds for sixth position.
Massey was chased by Magda Toeters of Netherlands, who stayed 2.35 seconds apart and ended her race in a time of 2 minutes and 17.70 seconds.
Toeters remained 0.34 seconds faster from Kara Leo of Australia, who completed her race in eighth place by posting a time of 2 minutes and 18.04 seconds.
Applegate was pleased with her unmatchable form in the discipline and collected her accolade after the event.
