Jessica Korda’s ranking jumps to 82nd thanks to Royal Melbourne triumph
Jessica Korda is more than trilled after clinching an impressive victory at the Women’s Australian Open last week. The American teenager’s world ranking has now surged to 82nd, thanks to the number one spot at Royal Melbourne.
Expressing her excitement about the rise in her world ranking, Korda said that she was pretty happy that her standing skyrocketed by 203 spots — something she never expected before setting foot on the course of Royal Melbourne.
Jessica, who is only 18 years old, outplayed some of the big names in women’s golf. She grabbed her fans' attention on the course, as she took the match to a 6-player playoff.
The playoff was tough but the teenager proved that she was unwavering, as she did not give up until the last moment.
Korda shot a birdie in the second hole of the playoff, beating her rivals to record her first LGPGA win.
Although Korda’s performance caused a huge shift in the women’s world golf rankings, top spots were still unhurt.
Yani Tseng, who has been standing at the number one position for the past several months, did not have to worry about Korda jumping 203 positions.
In addition to that, other top 6 positions also remain unchanged.
However, Royal Melbourne was not devoid of challenges. Korda had to face some difficulty when she came face-to-face with So Yeon Ryu of South Korea.
Korda made comfortable strokes, surging past the South Korean star. The second round was the most spectacular, as the rising star gained a big lead owing to a good score.
Korda said that she was thrilled by her marvellous game in all the four rounds. Stacy Lewis form America, who was going strong in the early stages of the match, saw tough resistance from Korda.
The first round saw her make 1-under 72, which was average. Apart from two bogeys, the round was almost flawless.
Birdying 2 consecutive holes boosted her confidence and she came off even better in the 2nd round. She scored a 3-under 73 in the 2nd round and strengthened her position on the leaderboard.
"I'm overwhelmed," Korda said. "I was really calm. I knew what the putt did because I'd had it before and it did not move".
