Jessica Pegula downs Paula Ormaechea to reach the main draw – BNP Paribas Open 2012
In a match between two teenage starlets, local wild card enterer Jessica Pegula tumbled over Argentina’s Paula Ormaechea in straight sets at the BNP Paribas Open 2012 on Tuesday. She summed up a 6-2, 6-2 victory over the 19-year-old to book a place in the
main draw of this 4.5 million WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) event.
The world number 305, Pegula showed exceptional skills to upset Ormaechea in their first meeting at this WTA Premier Mandatory event taking place in Indian Wells, United States. After earning success in this 66-minute duel, the American confidently entered
the opening round at this hard court tournament.
Pegula entered the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and held her serve in the first game with poise. She maintained her intensity after this and pocketed the opener with a 6-2 win after wiping out the final four games successively. The American held entire serves
without facing any hindrance and converted two out of four break chances to her advantage.
The 18-year-old lost her track in the second set and suffered the first blow in the opening game. Regardless of recovering in the very next game, she lost her serve again in the third game and trailed at 1-2. However, Pegula unveiled her true form after
this and went on a five-game tear to seal the set by winning six games to two. The American was unsuccessful in defending both breakpoints she faced but cashed in half of the eight break opportunities.
Overall, the local star clobbered almost an equal first serve share of 53 percent but impressively clinched 16 out of 21 points on it. She also fully capitalised on the several unforced errors and four double faults the Argentinean committed.
Next up for the wild card is Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova. Pegula is eying to reach the second round to confront the 16th seed, Dominika Cibulkova, who received a first round bye.
Lesia Tsurenko will join the American in the main draw. She stunned the qualifier’s 17th seed, Alla Kudryavtseva, with a breadstick to advance in this event. The Ukrainian lost her serve once but broke the Russian’s serve five times to seal the
deal with a 6-3, 6-1 score line. Tsurenko also produced a higher first serve share of 61 per cent in contrast with Kudryavtseva’s 57 per cent and amazingly marked 19 out of 30 points on it.
She will next face Israeli ace, Shahar Peer, in round one.
