Jessica Pengelly overwhelms Women’s 400m IM prelims – EnergyAustralia SC Championships
Jessica Pengelly of South Africa overwhelmed the qualification rounds of Women’s 400m Individual Medley (IM) on first day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Short Course Championships at Challenge Stadium in Perth on Wednesday, September 12.
The South African showered her expertise in the distant IM discipline as she rushed her way towards the finishing blockade and secured top position of the event.
With her relentless efforts, Pengelly enjoyed a lead of almost five seconds over her closest challenger and tapped the wall for first position with a timing of 4 minutes and 35.51 seconds.
Pengelly was traced by Aisling Scott of Nudgee Brothers, who remained almost 10 metres apart and emerged on the finishing blockade as second best finisher by clocking a time of 4 minutes and 40.39 seconds.
Scott was chased by Ellen Fullerton of Chandler, QLD, who was one and a half body length behind and tapped the wall for third position by submitting a time of 4 minutes and 41.88 seconds.
Fourth best qualification spot of the race was secured by Tianni Gilmour of Pelican Waters, who remained just one stroke behind and settled on the wall with an effort of 4 minutes and 42.19 seconds.
Fifth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Alanna Bowles of Rocky City, who stayed almost three body lengths behind and touched the wall with a timing of 4 minutes and 44.91 seconds.
Bowles was traced by Jackie Staples of Norwood, SA, who stayed 0.13 seconds slower and transpired on the finishing end as sixth fastest swimmer by clocking an effort of 4 minutes and 45.04 seconds.
Staples was trailed by Leah Cutting of Norwood, SA, who remained 0.67 seconds slower and completed her race in a time of 4 minutes and 45.71 seconds for seventh position.
Cutting was followed by Mikka Sheridan of Chandler, QLD, who suffered a loss of one body length and concluded her race in eighth best place by tapping the wall with an effort of 4 minutes and 46.87 seconds.
Pengelly was contented with her fastest qualification effort and expressed her desire of achieving the same in playoff.
