Jessicah Schipper wins Women’s 100m butterfly semi-final – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
Chandler’s Jessicah Schipper conquered the top qualification spot of Women’s 100m butterfly semi-final on first day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide on Thursday, March 15.
The 25-year-old Schipper sustained her position in the second round of the discipline and crushed hopes of her supporters by finishing first in the event.
She faced strong battle from Alicia Coutts of Redlands, who tried to overpower her in the double lap butterfly event but failed to withstand Schipper’s incredible efforts in the final lap.
The 24-year-old Coutts displayed her immaculate skills in the initial lap of the race, where she clocked a time of 27.36 seconds. She remained 0.03 seconds ahead of Schipper, who ended her first half of the race in a time of 27.39 seconds.
Coutts continued her gruelling efforts in the second half but she failed to handle ruthless aggression of Schipper, who outsmarted her on the finishing end by submitting a time of 58.26 seconds. With her outstanding swim, she stayed only 0.04 seconds ahead
of Coutts, who ended second by clocking an effort of 58.30 seconds.
The third spot of the event was obtained by Britta Elmslie of Nudgee Brothers, who was only 0.71 seconds slower from her preceding finisher and ended her swim with the timing of 59.01 seconds. The 17-year-old Elmslie was chased by Alice Tait of Southport
Olympic Swimming Club, who settled on the finishing end for fourth position with an effort of 59.24 seconds.
The arena witnessed fantastic efforts of ST Peters Western Swim Club’s Yolane Kukla, who proved her eligibility for the fifth fastest spot of the event by submitting an effort of 59.65 seconds. In the meantime, Lisbe Trickett of Chandlers snared sixth qualifying
position into the playoff as she clocked an effort of 59.67 seconds.
Marieke Guehrer of Melbourne and City of Perth’s Brianna Throssell secured seventh and eighth qualifying positions of the event as they ended their swims with timings of 59.70 seconds and 1:00.09 minutes, respectively.
Furthermore, these competitors will have the opportunity to race against each other in the playoff of 100m event, where the top two position holders will qualify for the Australian team to London.
