Jessie Vargas defies all odds to collect impressive unanimous win over Steve Forbes – Boxing News
Jessie Vargas, the undefeated American fighter, collected an impressive unanimous decision and overwhelmed the more experienced Steve Forbes, the former IBF super featherweight champion, in a 10-round bout held on May 5, 2012.
The duo met at the undercard of the pay-per-view jointly promoted by Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions, Miguel Cotto of Promociones Miguel Cotto, and Leonard Ellerbe of Mayweather Promotions.
The event was headlined by the WBA super world light middleweight championship bout between Floyd Mayweather Junior and Miguel Cotto whereas the WBC light middleweight championship bout between Saul Alvarez and Shane Mosley co-headlined the Saturday night
showdown.
Jessie, 22, is an emerging pugilist who has in a very young age achieved much in his career in fact proudly resides at the world’s ninth rank. Vargas was entering in his 19th career bout and boasted an undefeated win streak.
He has never lost even a single bout in his career and was able to nail nine of his opponents by sheer knockout. The young Las Vegas lad has collected wins over many big names such as Vivian Harris, Walter Estrada and others and was coming from an impressive
unanimous decision victory over Lanardo Tyner.
Despite the flawless resume, Jessie was seriously overshadowed by Steve’s experience but this facet did not matter much during the bout. Steve, 35, was entering in his 46th bout and was able to collect 35 wins with just 11 via knockout.
The odds were completely against Steve as he was coming from a dual loss to Karim Mayfield and Ionut Dan Ion. Forbes, also known as ‘2pound’, is going through an extremely bad phase of his career since he collected three losses in his last five bouts.
Interestingly, all the three men who easily nailed Steve were rookie level pugilists and possessed experience less than him. His deficiencies were clearly visible during the bout and Steve was unable to put forth Jessie a tough stand up competition.
Vargas targeted Steve’s body and face and connected many punches during the 10-round wild ride. Steve strived hard to overcome the wave of attack unleashed by Jessie but all his efforts went in vain as his jabs though connected yet were unable to inflict
the requisite damage.
At the end of the bout, all the three designated judges unanimously declared the young Jessie as the winner of the bout by awarding 100-90, 97-93, and 99-91 in his favour. With this win Jessie has successfully defended not only his undefeated win streak
but has also collected another impressive win in his resume which will further elevate him in the world rankings.
Steve, on the other hand, has collected his third consecutive and 11th career defeat and he must now undergo a revamp session so as to overcome his deficiencies.
