Jesus Flores suffers hamstring strain against Atlanta Braves - MLB Update
The Washington Nationals find catcher Jesus Flores discomforted with a right hamstring strain. The game against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday spelled his misfortune and threatened his entry for anytime soon in the season.
He quit the game halfway and left the Nationals bracing for a reality of another catcher meeting injury.
Flores had come as replacement for injured catcher, Wilson Ramos. In his absence, he has been doing great job. With .263 batting average and eight RBIs in the season, he somehow neutralised an impact of his absence.
Nationals’ manager Davey Johnson was pleased with the way he was connecting hits and doing tremendous defensive work behind plate.
A kind of backup the Nationals has is evident by the way Flores had led the charge with Ramos out. He did not allow anyone to raise questions about any relationship between presence of Ramos in the line-up and better performance by the Nationals’ offence.
Since, there is no sign that Ramos will recover soon; trouble at right hamstring to Flores and his possible miss-outs as a result mean the Nationals’ depth is going to be tested thoroughly.
The question is whether, one more substitute catcher, the Nationals are going to put will also be as effective.
Even as Flores left the game due to injury, the manager is confident that he will not take a long-time for making come back.
Calling his injury of mild nature, he says, there are no chances of his being sent to disabled-list and that he will most probably be taking part in extended Spring Training.
“I saw him walk to second and I said, ‘I got to go get him,’” Johnson said. “I can’t take a chance. But I think he’s going to be alright.”
Despite not feeling well at the moment, Flores is optimistic to make the line-up on Tuesday or Wednesday. Though, he is being cautious and will not risk anyway, saying that injury is of minor nature signals a relative ease he has.
“We’re going to take it day by day, see how it goes,” Flores said. “Hopefully, I can make it back on Tuesday or Wednesday.”
The Nationals will want to have him back no later than next game. If he takes some time for recovery, the Nationals will be looking upon other options.
