Jesus Guzman sparks as San Diego Padres defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3 - MLB Update
San Diego Padres’ first baseman, Jesus Guzman had a notable day with the bat as he went 2-for-2 with an average of .329 and contributed two runs with two RBIs in the Padres’ 4-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Petco Park, San Diego on July 28.
At the top of the first inning, Kelly Johnson and Justin Upton were struck-out swinging while Gerardo Parra grounded out to short-stop position without adding any run for the Diamondbacks. Similarly, the Padres’ batters also failed to connect the ball at
the bottom of the first inning as Will Venable fouled out to first base while Jason Bartlett and Cameron Maybin struck-out swinging.
Diamondbacks’ batters posted two runs at the top of the second inning to take a lead while the Padres were able to score just one run to reduce their lead 2-1 at the bottom of the second inning. Brandon Allen struck a two-run homer (403 feet) to left-centre
and Chris Young posted a single run.
On the other side, Guzman hit a solo homer (388 feet) towards left-field to keep the Padres alive. In the third inning, the pitchers stopped the scoring shots and struck-out the batters on their amazing throws. In the fourth inning, Guzman reached towards
short-stop on an infield single and Maybin added a single run to tie the game 2-2.
During the fifth inning, Luis Martinez singled to right-centre but Bartlett struck-out looking and Venable grounded out to second base, without taking any run. Mat Latos pitched his five innings with an ERA of 4.10 and gave up three earned runs including
four walks. He presented four hits and three runs as he struck-out seven batters on his 101 pitches.
In the sixth inning, Allen walked, Upton posted a single run and Miguel Montero moved to third base. The Padres went ahead 4-3 at the bottom of the sixth inning by blasting two quick runs. Orlando Hudson singled to centre-field and Guzman contributed one
run. The second run was taken by Hudson when Martinez drove a single-run shot towards left-field. Kyle Blanks occupied third base at the end of sixth inning.
With this hard-fought victory, the Padres avoided a sweep against the Diamondbacks and ended the three-game series 2-1.
