Jet ski question?

So i have just spent the past 9 months rebuilding my jet ski engine(9 months bc i go away to school and worked on it during my breaks)

and tomorrow is the day i hook up the battery and start her up for the first time. and i cant sit still. Any recommendations for the first start up? I oiled the c**p out of the engine so i know there will be plenty of lubrication for the inital start up.

Should i use a hotter spark plug? It came with NGK BR9ES spark plug. Should i move up to a NGK BR11ES???

  1. Don't run the hotter plug you may wind up needing to rebuild the top end again sooner than you want!

If you have done everything properly, and made initial adjustments "by the book" I would try and start it on the trailer, let if fire and run for two to four seconds, then go to the water! Don't try and fool with a garden hose. You've been into the engine, so you know that coolant (water) runs into the exhaust, and if you are not careful with the garden hose you will "hydro-lock" the pistons, or worse sieze them!

On the water, try and run for at least 10 minutes, and vary the speed, then check and recheck adjustments and such, then have fun!

  2. just make sure you have good spark, fuel, and air..  Also make sure water will cool it.  if the water pump goes so will all the hard work

  3. Use a normal spark plug rated for the engine. Start up at normal speed. And don't rev it until it breaks in for an hour or so.

  4. well a BR8ES is hotter then a BR9ES. Just try it

  5. Use the BR9ES spark plug.   If it's a 2 stroke  pre-mix a little extra oil in the first tank of gas - go with a 40 to 1 ratio.  Vary your speed for the first hour  or two and don't hold it wide open for more than 15 or 20 seconds.

  6. You will need to hook up a hose for a water line to cool if you are not starting it in water. also premix the gas with 2 stroke oil. You will want to see a slightly blue color in the exhaust smoke. Plenty of lubrication is key when breaking in a new motor. Also a little advise. I have have seen  motors seize up because oil pumps have failed. I removed my oil pump and just premix now so I know its getting oil.
