  1. As a whole the Jet streams move from west to east, but in certain locations, the flow can be actually a north/south heading becaue of the curveature of the streams..

And there are also different types of jet streams, Polar and Sub-Tropcial jets.

In the summer the jet streams can actully flow from east to west in the tropical regions.

  2. John B is correct.  It's due to the rotation of the earth.  Since the entire earth tends to spin in one direction, the jetstreams mainly flow from the west to the east.  Depending on the time of the year you will get large "waves."

Some of you are thinking of Cyclones or low pressure systems which rotate counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere.

  3. Must have been another Al Gore documentary. The jetstreams flow west to east in both hemispheres.

And there are no jetstreams in the tropics. Besides inventing the internet, I think Al Gore may have written wikipedia too.

  4. Well Buddy,

The major jet streams are westerly winds (flowing west to east) in the Northern Hemisphere, although in the summer, easterly jets can form in tropical regions.

Also, check out the link below for more concise information.

    Hope this helps.

    God Bless

  5. in the northern hemisphere from west to east - in the southern hemisphere from east to west.

  6. I think grinny is talking about how a toilet flushes. But what do I know....

Clockwise in one hemisphere counter clockwise in the other.

I'm about to go to the john now.... I'll report back later. :)
