Jets Reaching Out to Darrelle Revis
New York Jets owner Woody Johnson indicated that intentions were to reward All-Pro cornerback (CB) Darrelle Revis with a larger contract and indicated he would reach out to Revis.
Revis has indicated all season that he was looking for a new contract that would make him the highest paid player at his position in the league. That has been proven difficult to come by with the uncertainty of the league’s labour situation and several other Jets seeking new deals. Revis has expressed his frustration by not reporting to training camp.
General Manager Mike Tannenbaum recently spoke to Revis’ agent to try to work on a new deal, but the sides are still really far apart from reaching a deal, which is why Revis has still not practiced with the team.
Coach Rex Ryan himself has admitted that the team has discussed Revis so far in training camp, unlike most coaches who never discuss any holdouts.
"I always mention it," Ryan said. "We go over the goals of our football team. Why wouldn't you mention that? You're talking about a tremendous football player and a great teammate. He's one of the guys. He's still a Jet. He's just not here."
Revis is taking a daily fine of $16,000 for missing camp and he has so far paid over $50,000 in the time he has missed from camp. He is taking a risk with the time he is holding out, but may be rewarded with a very large extension and pay hike.
"We admit that if Darrelle's not here, it's going to be more difficult," Ryan said. "You're taking the best corner in the league out of your defence. But by no means does that mean we're not going to still get it done. We'll still get it done on defence."
Ryan also believes that Revis is taking advice from his uncle Sean Gilbert, a former defensive lineman in the NFL, who refused to sign his franchise tender and sat out the entire 1997 season.
A couple of months ago, Revis did acknowledge that he takes his uncle’s advice often.
"I always talk to my uncle," Revis said at the time. "He knows the situation, but he tries to stay out of certain things. He doesn't try to tell me what to do or try to be a control freak. He's a great uncle and his advice is always good."
It is certainly a case of risk versus reward and time will only tell which side wins in this ongoing dispute.
