Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano furious about his team’s failure to score touchdown – NFL News
Talks about the offensive output of New York Jets are heating up as they wrap up the preseason still without getting a single touchdown.
Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano remained silent about the offence’s inability to score touchdowns during the entire preseason, but all that changed on Tuesday, August 28, 2012.
It was expected that Sparano would finally break his silence about the matter as the regular season is inching closer and closer. Sparano said:
"We want touchdowns, not field goals. Make sure you put that in the headlines."
Looking into Sparano’s comment, one can understand the desperation in the Jets’ camp about the issue. He wants to send a clear message that he is not happy.
Jets’ offence managed to score three field goals in the third preseason game against Carolina Panthers, but failed to reach the end zone.
Severity of the situation can be understood from the fact that Jets have become only the first team in 35 years to be unable to get a touchdown in the first three games of preseason.
Sparano nevertheless managed to see some positives. He said:
“I wasn’t discouraged at all, I actually came out of that feeling really good about some of the things that we made progress with.”
Jets’ success in the offensive side of the game this season might lay on the wild cat package that backup quarterback Tim Tebow will give. The package is kept secret and is not even practised on the practice field.
Starting quarterback Mark Sanchez has played 15 possessions during the three games, but it seems that the offensive line is not strong enough to support him.
Sparano is hopeful that his team will manage to get a touchdown before the start of the season. He believes that the offence is working hard to get in a better shape. Sparano said:
“I think the guys are realists. They understand what’s going on. They see themselves getting better. . . I think the guys can see the improvement. They can see how close they are right now.”
Offensive line might see some changes after the trade of Wayne Hunter to get offensive tackle Jason Smith from St. Louis Rams on Monday.
