Jets reject latest Revis contract offer
The New York Jets look like they will be starting the NFL season without their best player, Darrelle Revis, after the team rejected his latest contract demands.
The team’s owner, Woody Johnson, says he’s not optimistic about having Revis in the starting line-up come the start of the season. Asked whether there was any progress in contract negotiations with the cornerback, Johnson said no.
"The answer is no. My impression is no progress ... no movement whatsoever,” Johnson said.
And when asked if Revis would play at all for the Jets this season, Johnson only said:"My gut feeling is, I would say no.”
Revis was set to earn $1million this season but reportedly has told friends he won’t return to the team for that salary. Revis’ agent Neil Schwartz said: "We gave Mike a proposal to show Mr. Johnson [on Friday], we're awaiting a response."
That proposal, it seems, has been rejected by the Jets and with Revis now being absent from training camp for nearly two weeks and getting fined almost $150,000 by the club, chances of him participating this season look more and more ominous.
"We're going to prepare like he's not going to be here. If he comes through the door, that's fine. Somebody will kiss him on the lips, probably. It doesn't matter. We're getting this team ready. The guys that are here, we're getting ready,” Jets head coach Rex Ryan said.
According to reports, Revis is looking to become the league’s highest paid cornerback averaging more than the $15.1million the Oakland Raiders' Nnamdi Asomugha. The Jets could afford to pay him that much and with this year being an uncapped year any complications regarding his contract should be overcome by giving a significant signing bonus.
If Revis does not resolve his contractual issues the Jets plan to play Antonio Cromartie at left cornerback and open up the right cornerback position to competition within the team.
