I was at my local beach today and saw a couple jetskiing, thought its exactly the kind of thing to interest me. Just wanted some advice on where to start? do you need insurance or a liscence to use it? or can you just take it anywhere? would ebay be a good place to buy a second hand one?? any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

  1. try renting one first, see if you like it, its like 50 bucks an hour, and you take a crash course for a temporary boaters license. save a lot of money if you find out that you dont really like it

  2. I would rent one out for a couple of hours to see if its what you really want to do.  If you mainly have 4 to 5 people and want to do watersports with it, I recommend you get a ski boat instead for that.

As for the laws and regulations for boats and PWC's, you need to grab you one of those state published "Boater laws and regulations" brochures.  These should fill you in on ALL required laws and regulations you must abide by.

As for insurance and license, most states require proof of insurance on most watercraft over 50 HP (differs from state to state).  Also, many states require a state issued boater education course or boating license before you can operate one.

As for not having any experience operating a watercraft on a lake, river, or ocean, you will need to take a boater education course before even attempting to go out.  There a lot of things you can be fined for and not knowing about an unlawful action is not a defense against a ticket or worse.  They hand out tickets on the water, not warnings.

Finally, be ready for the expense of owning one, you got to pay for insurance, fuel, maintenance costs, repairs, etc.

  3. go to www.rya.org.uk

look for infomation on PWC there should be a list of centres offering courses.

most places require you to have done the course before you can launch. in additionj you will need to think about insurance (you need third party as a miniumum) and feul costs
