Question:

Jeweller Doesn't Do His Job On My Engagement Ring?

My fiance & I got engaged back in April. I only had a very small, cheap basic ring & we upgraded almost a month ago.

Only 10 days after having the ring, the band snapped.

We took it back & one of the women in the shop said the jeweler obviously didn't do what we paid him to do, which was half shank the ring (where they cut the band in half & add a whole new band instead of stretching the band with resizing) but he resized it anyway & he didn't use enough solder to put it back together.

I picked it up the other day & he didn't even fix the crack he caused. The crack is still clearly visible & he just tried to cover it with a tiny amount of solder.

So now I'm waiting once again for it to be repaired (they said it should be ready by thursday).

The main problem is that if it gets taken to another jeweler for repairs, not only will I have to pay for the repairs but it voids it's 5yr warranty.

So out of the month I've had it, I've got to wear it for a total of 10 days.

I wanted to know, what action can I take if for the 3rd time this jeweler doesn't do his job?

What would you do?

Sorry, its so long.

  1. it depends.  if it's a mom and pop jeweler, than i would speak to the owner or a manager.   if he is the owner, you might have to eat the money and take it somewhere else.  after all, the warranty there wouldnt be worth a plug nickel if that is the shoddy warranty repairs that you would get.

if it's a chain jeweler, i would speak to the manager.  if he/she isn't receptive, i would go to the franchise owner.  if they arent receptive, i would go to corporate.  make sure that you document everything, with pictures.  demand results.

the biggest mistake that you made though is that you took delivery on the ring with the bad workmanship.  i would have said, i'm not taking this back until you fix it.  reason for that is...it becomes "your word against his" for how the damage happened.  it's good that the other woman in the store told you what happened.  don't think that she's gonna have your back when it comes to a refund though.  she'll either magically not be working that day, or will all of the sudden clam up.  she knows where her bread is buttered after all.  i wish you luck on all of this though.

  2. Honestly, I'd go ahead and go to another jeweler.  No point in a 5-year warranty if this one can't even fix it long enough to last a week, and if the new guy does his job right, you might not need one.  Maybe if you suggest making a claim to the Better Business Bureau first, the current jeweler will shape up, though.
