My Mom made the best of both, unfortunatly she passed unexpectedly and now I'm left wondering, do you use already baked potatoes for latkas? and how do I make Chaulla bread (knotted potato bread)? I wish I'd payed attention when she tried to teach me.

  1. we use raw potatoes and grate them and chop onions and add the oil.   i dont believe we cook the potatoes first since they cook while they are in the pan.

This is a great website for the steps of baking a challah: http://kosherfood.about.com/od/sabbathco...

(We buy ours from the kosher deli or grocery store which is baked in a local home and distributed and its delicious)

    :) Enjoy!

  2. For latkes, you take boiled potatoes and sent them through a food processor.

  3. We use left over mashed potatoes. But the Jewish Mother has the best recipe. My bread never turns out like I want it so I usually buy it.

  4. Latkes use raw potatoes. It's most common to grate them, but my family just throws everything into the blender. The latkes don't end up like big thick pancakes you would find in a deli, but thin and really crisp instead. Don't forget to serve with applesauce and sour cream!

4 medium to large potatoes, peeled and cubed

1 small onion peeled and cubed

    2 eggs

    2 tablespoons matzo meal

    salt

    oil

Blend eggs, onion, matzo meal, salt and 1 C cubed potatoes in blender, then add remaining potatoes and blend. Heat oil in big frypan, drop spoonfuls of mixture in and spread out. Brown, turn, brown the other side. Drain on paper towels.
