Jez Wilson pins Liam Cameron to become BBBC central area middleweight champion – Boxing News
Jez Wilson, the surging British middleweight, collected his career’s very first title by nailing fellow countryman Liam Cameron, via point basis decision in a 10-round bout held on June 23, 2012. The duo met at the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield, Yorkshire,
United Kingdom, headlining the event.
The Saturday night showdown was organised and promoted by Dennis Hobson of Dennis Hobson Promotions and was co-headlined by the non-title six-round welterweight bout between Steven Swinburn and Monsoor Wali.
Jez, 33, also known as ‘Smoking’, was entering the ring with eight wins and a two-bout win streak in a total of 10 bouts. The Yorkshire proud has collected just one loss in his career. He possesses decent knockout ability, as he has pinned five of his opponents
by sheer knockouts. His Saturday night opponent, Liam, was undoubtedly in a pretty better rather favourable condition.
Cameron, 21, not only had the experience edge over Wilson but also possessed height and reach advantage. Liam, well known as ‘Cannonball’, was entering his career’s 14th bout.
The young lad has nailed just four of his 12 opponents by knockout. Despite the fact that Liam had the substantial reach advantage, Cameron devastated his Saturday night bout by undergoing the wrong game plan.
On the other hand, Wilson after carefully understanding the pros and cons of the scenario adopted the perfect inside out attack strategy. During the whole bout, Liam moved sharply in the ring whereas Wilson just waited for the apropos moments to connect
his powerful jabs.
Cameron’s early senseless movements, later on, back-fired as a result Liam got sluggish and came just in the right spot for Wilson. Jez battered Liam and avoided the huge man’s long jabs.
At the end of the 10-round battle, the referee pronounced Wilson as the winner of the bout by awarding him 97-95 points. After the bout, the triumphant champion stated, “This is like a world title for me. I had thought about retiring during the times when
opponents have cancelled on me but all that frustration, effort and sacrifice has been worth it.”
Liam, while sharing his thoughts, admitted his foolery and stated, “He is strong, but not as strong as people said and he never hurt me once. It was close, but I moved around too much in the early rounds and that had an effect.”
The unlucky and somewhat insensible loss has tarnished Cameron’s resume who now has two losses in a total of 14 bouts.
