Jhon Junior and Pablo Monteiro off to a successful start at Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro
Portugal’s Jhon Junior and Spain’s Pablo Monteiro kicked-off the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 3-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro with success in their respective Round 1 (Round of 112) heats that went down at the main event site of Playa de Pantin in Galicia, Spain, on Wednesday, September 12.
Venezuela’s Jesus Chacon finished behind Junior in second place during the opening heat, thus advancing through into the second round (Round of 96). Venezuela’s Adrian Ortiz finished in third place, while Italy’s Armando Colucci had to settle for fourth place. Their lacklustre performance resulted in their premature exit from the competition.
The second heat saw Spain’s Daniel Aznar Gonzale accompany Monteiro into the next heat after claiming runner-up place. Hawaii’s Cheyne Willis and America’s Alex Kamkoff finished in third and fourth place respectively, thus getting eliminated from the competition.
The opening day of the competition saw two-to-three foot waves breaking at the primary event site. The conditions seemed good enough to promise a heavy dose of enthralling and entertaining series of battles between the young guns of surfing.
The first heat saw Junior take on Chacon, Ortiz and Colucci in a four-man battle for top honours. The Portuguese surfer went through a series of mediocre waves before eventually raising the bar with a 6.67-point ride. Keeping the momentum going, he added another 5.73 points to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total of 12.40 points.
Chacon responded with a couple of scores in the four-point range, thus finishing with a heat-total of 8.90 points, which proved sufficient to keep him alive in the contention for the event title.
Ortiz and Colucci got eliminated after registering a heat-total of 5.67 and 3.00 points respectively.
The second heat saw Monteiro pitted against Gonzale, Willis and Kamkoff in a battle for survival. All four surfers struggled to adapt to the conditions on hand, hardly coming across any opportunity to cash on.
Monteiro eventually managed to clinch the win after finishing with a heat-total of 6.33 points, which included a 2.83 and 3.50-point ride.
Gonzale successfully extended his life in the event as well after scoring a 2.93 and 2.40 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 5.33 points.
Willis finished in third place with a heat-total of 3.87 points, while Kamkoff finished fourth after concluding the heat with a two-wave total of 3.77 points.
