Jhonny Gonzalez all set to defend his WBC featherweight gold against Elio Rojas – Boxing News
Jhonny Gonzalez, the current WBC featherweight champion, will enter in his fourth title-defence bout against the surging Dominican Elio Rojas, the former WBC featherweight champion, in a 12-round bout on April 28, 2012.
The announcement was made in a gathering attended by the promoters organising the event and Gonzalez himself. The Saturday night show is being promoted by Don King of Don King Productions, Reginaldo & Oswaldo Kuchle of Promociones del Pueblo, Hector Garcia
of HG Boxing and Jose Gomez of Cancun Boxing.
Jhonny-Elio fight will headline the pay-per-view and Juan Carlos Salgado will defend his IBF super featherweight gold against fellow countryman Martin Honorio while co-headlining the Saturday night boxing show.
Jhonny, 30, has a clear upper hand over Elio in various facets. The veteran has been in a total 58 bouts and came out victorious in 51. He has nailed a huge 45 opponents by knockout which shows that how much of a lethal and powerful pounder Gonzalez is.
Elio, on the other hand, has entered the ring 24 times and successfully nailed 23 of his opponents. The 29-year-old has collected 14 of his wins via knockout and resides at his country’s number one featherweight spot.
The odds are absolutely in favour of Jhonny not because Rojas is a low-calibre pugilist but because Gonzalez is the more experienced one who is ranked number three featherweight in the world and who possesses far better knockout ability than Rojas.
The skirmish between the two, to some extent, can be dubbed as ‘the clash between a veteran and a newbie’. Elio, widely known as ‘The Kid’, has taken on hefty names such as Guty Espadas Junior, Takahiro Ao, Hector Velazquez and others and even collected
emphatic wins over them but still has not fought all the top-ranked pugilists in the division who are genuinely more powerful, talented, and ruthless.
Jhonny, on the contrary, has almost completely wiped the whole division and there are hardly one or two brawlers left in the division with whom he has not fought. During the brief interview while making the announcement of the engagement, Jhonny, commented,
“The fight is complicated by Elio Rojas’ style. He runs a lot, has a difficult style, but we are preparing to beat him and defend our championship.”
One thing is for sure that the bout will definitely be a masterpiece since Elio has made himself quite a repo of creating upsets and on the other hand, Jhonny will strive hard to nullify the Dominican Kid’s attempt in order to retain his gold for the fourth
consecutive time. The event will be televised live on Mexico Televisa.
