Jhonny Gonzalez collects unanimous win over Elio Rojas to retain WBC featherweight title – Boxing News
Jhonny Gonzalez, the WBC featherweight champion, successfully defended his precious title for the fourth consecutive time against Dominican Republic’s Elio Rojas, the former WBC featherweight champion, by collecting a unanimous decision in his favour in
a 12-round bout held on April, 28, 2012.
The ring for the bout was stretched at Grand Oasis Resort arena situated in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico and the event was promoted by the trio of Reginaldo & Oswaldo Kuchle of Promociones del Pueblo, Antonio Lozada of Baja Boxing and Jose Gomez of Cancun
Boxing.
The above two men headlined the Saturday night show, whereas the IBF super featherweight bout between Juan Carlos Salgado and Martin Honorio co-headlined the pay-per-view which was televised live on Fox channel.
Jhonny had a clear upper hand from the very beginning of the bout due to various significant facets. It must be kept in mind that for Elio the bout was of pivotal importance since it was he who forfeited the gold in the first place due to a severe hand injury
that led Jhonny the chance to grab the title in upcoming months.
It is this reason why Rojas was striving hard to take back what once was round his waist. But at the same time, Elio faced a tough problem as on the other side of the ring was a man who was in his 59th career bout and boasted 51 wins with 45 of them via
knockout.
In addition, the bout was Jhonny’s fourth title defence engagement and he also possessed the hometown advantage. Despite all these odds Elio entered the ring and put forth an epic performance that collected much applause from the crowd.
Elio did not lose his sight off the champion for even a single split second and sharply pounded Jhonny with powerful jabs. Up till the fifth round, Jhonny was controlling the pace of the bout but with the start of the sixth round, Elio who was continuously
targeting Gonzalez’s body eventually was able to slow his pace.
This gave ample chance to Rojas to unleash his attack, and he started pummelling Jhonny but the champion did not drop his defence at all and kept on collecting precious points by connecting fists.
In the 10th round, Jhonny threw a powerful explosive jab that connected Elio’s liver and stunned him for a while from then onwards, Rojas was unable to make a comeback and just took the beating eventually ending the 12-round showdown.
All the three judges unanimously declared Jhonny as the champion with the scores of 117-111, 116-112, and 116-111. With this win, Gonzalez has collected 52 victories in his resume and has successfully strengthened his reign. Elio, on the other hand, has
collected his second career loss in a total 25 bouts.
