Jhonny Peralta and Doug Fister help Detroit Tigers beat Toronto Blue Jays 4-1 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers finally managed to find winning ways as they secured a comfortable 4-1 win against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario on Sunday, July 29 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular
season.
Despite winning just twice in their last six games, the Tigers remain at second place on the American League Central Division standings and it will be interesting to see if they can give consistent results in their next series against Boston Red Sox to replace
Chicago White Sox at the top of league standings.
Doug Fister, who had forgettable time on the mound in his previous start against Cleveland Indians, led the Tigers to an important win on Sunday. Overall, he gave up just a run with nine strike-outs in eight effective innings. Jose Valverde pitched the perfect
ninth for his 20th save of the season.
"We had the right tonic for a nice winning formula today: a three-run homer and excellent pitching," manager Jim Leyland said.
"An excellent pitching performance," Leyland said. "Doug did an great job of keeping them off balance all day long and mixed his pitches extremely well."
Jhonny Peralta ended his seven day drought between hits with a three run home-run to left in the second to put the Tigers 3-1 ahead. Peralta connected for another home-run in the bottom of the ninth to deny Blue Jays any chance of coming back into the contest.
"The first game we played here (Friday), I got to 3-2 a couple of times and they threw me a lot of breaking balls," Peralta said. "Today I was thinking `OK, if it's 3-2 and they throw a breaking ball to me, something will happen.' It happened."
Blue Jays had crushed the Tigers in both the opening two games of the series and they had an excellent chance to wrap up a rare series sweep against Jim Leyland and his men. Credit should be given to the Tigers for coming up with the perfect winning formula
just at the right time to avoid another humiliating series defeat.
