Jhonny Peralta sparks as Detroit Tigers defeat Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers’ third baseman, Jhonny Peralta had a superb day as he went 2-for-4 with an average of .311 and scored one run with one RBI in the Tigers’ 4-2 win against the Toronto Blue Jays at Comerica Park, Detroit on June 27.
Both teams were score-less in the first inning as Yunel Escobar was struck-out looking and Eric Thames struck-out swinging at the top of the first. Andy Dirks was grounded-out to second base and Don Kelly flied-out to right-field at the bottom of the first
inning.
The Tigers opened their scoring account during the second inning and took a 1-0 lead when Victor Martinez doubled to deep centre-field and Miguel Cabrera posted one run. In the third inning, the Tigers got a 2-0 lead when Brennan Boesch scored a single run
on the drive of Martinez towards right-field and Cabrera moved to third base at the end of inning.
On the other side, the Jays scored two runs in the fourth inning and tied the game 2-2. Jose Bautista was grounded out to short-stop and Thames added his first run. Adam Lind struck a solo homer towards right-field to add up the second run for his team.
Fifth to seventh inning were in favour of the pitchers as they did not give away any run during this span. The Tigers’ starter, Max Scherzer pitched seven economical innings with an ERA of 4.47 and gave away two runs on six hits. He permitted only one walk
on his 95 pitches and had nine strike-outs.
The Tigers’ manager, Jim Leyland said, “Don't ask me about the play, whatever you do. That was a good win in a tough game. We're playing a lot of games in a short stretch, and I'm proud of these guys.”
During the eighth inning, the Tigers’ batters scored two runs and went ahead 4-2. Peralta tripled towards deep right-centre and Austin Jackson posted a tie-breaking run. The last and final run was taken by Peralta when Ryan Raburn hit a grounder into fielder’s
choice to short-stop.
Jackson commented on his roster and said, “We know that everyone in this lineup has the chance to get us that big hit. We've got strong hitters at one through nine.”
The batters failed to post any run in the ninth inning. The Tigers put in a tremendous effort as they managed to contain the Blue Jays’ offence and get a much needed win.
