Ji Hoon Hong stuns Yan Kit Chan in Men’s Singles first round of the 2011 Vietnam Open Grand Prix
Korea’s talented player, Ji Hoon Hong displayed a stunning performance in the Men’s Singles first round when he crushed higher ranked, Yan Kit Chan of Hong Kong at the 2011 Vietnam Open Grand Prix, in Vietnam, on Tuesday, August 23.
The un-seeded Korean surprised everyone by playing incredible badminton against the experienced Kit Chan, who is currently placed at Number 36 in the Men’s Singles world rankings. Hoon Hong played to his maximum potential and won the match with in straight
games by taking 32 minutes in the court.
The first set was interesting in the start, as both players displayed their attacking and fast badminton skills. However, the Korean started to dominate the game by increasing his speed and reached at 11-7 in the opening part of the first set.
Kit Chan changed his tactics after the interval but could not stop the aggressive run of the Korean who refused to slow down the pace of the rallies. Hoon Hong was playing perfect net strokes and his deceptive pushes from the net broke the flow of his rival.
He clinched the opening game without wasting any time by a margin of 21-13 in just 15 minutes.
In the second game, Kit Chan played fast badminton in the starting points to tackle the aggression of the Korean, who was playing with incredible speed and accuracy. The strokes placement of Hoon Hong was wonderful as he quickly created gaps in his opponent’s
court and manipulated the weaknesses of the higher ranked, Kit Chan, by a playing smart game. At the break, the Korean remained successful in reaching 11-7.
After the break, the Hong Kong shuttler tried to employ changed tactics but his opponent was ready for these changes. The Korean shuttler proved that he came in the tournament with serious intentions and high targets, as he won the second game with the score
of 21-14 in 17 minutes. This Men’s Singles 32-minute match finished off with the margin of 21-13 and 21-14.
