Jia Perkins lead as San Antonio Silver Stars beat Los Angeles Sparks 90-80 in overtime – WNBA Recap
Jia Perkins came off the bench with a game-high 31 points and eight rebounds and the San Antonio Silver Stars beat Los Angeles Sparks 90-80 in overtime on Friday night at AT&T Center. Perkins was simply unstoppable on the night, going 13 of 18 from the field
including 4 of 7 from the three point range.
After the game, she said "I just came into the game with the mindset that I was going to attack." "I just wanted to get my shot off or find teammates. Whatever it was, I just wanted to be aggressive. Early on, the shots started falling so it makes it more
comfortable for you to keep shooting."
Becky Hammon had 22 points, nine assists, three rebounds and two steals for the San Antonio, who bounced back from their only defeat of the season to Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday night. Sophia Young added 12 points and seven rebounds while Ruth Riley ended
with 11 points and nine rebounds in the defeat.
Candace Parker, who played a game-high 41 minutes, was the only player who registered a double-double. Parker poured in 25 points, pulled down a game-high 13 boards and dished out four assists to lead the Sparks.
Forward DeLisha Milton contributed 15 points, six rebounds and four assists for Los Angeles, who saw their three-game winning streak snapped. Noelle Quinn chipped in with 10 points, six assists, and four rebounds in the loss.
Neither team shot well from the field. The Sparks made just 39.7 percent of their shots overall while the Silver Stars shot 45 percent from the field.
The Sparks scored eight unanswered points in the first two minutes of the first quarter to take initial lead. Parker, Milton-Jones, and Quinn really played well as Los Angeles stretched their lead to 20-8 with five minutes to go in the opening period. Perkins
then hit a three-pointer and Adams quickly drove to the rim to cut the deficit to seven points. With 01:32 to go in the quarter, Sparks scored five consecutive points to take a 28-17 lead into the second.
San Antonio’s 7-2 spurt early in the second quarter closed the gap to three, 30-27, and Perkins’ lay-up at 03:33 mark put them ahead by one, 37-36. Thompson hit a pair of free throw Milton-Jones pinned a three-pointer to give Los Angeles a two-point lead,
41-39, with 02:10 remaining in the quarter. Perkins then drove to the rim to tie the game at 41 and Robinson scored one of the free throws to put the Silver Stars ahead by one. However, Toliver’s jumper at the buzzer made it 43-42 for San Antonio, heading
into the locker room.
Los Angeles outscored the hosts 22-17, taking a 65-59 advantage into the fourth. The Sparks brought a six-point advantage into the fourth quarter, but it quickly disappeared after Perkins opened the period with a bang. However, Los Angeles found its way
to take 78-73 lead with 01:46 to go in the fourth. Perkins’ jumper and Hammon’s 3-pointer in the last one and half minute of the quarter tied the game at 78, sending in into overtime.
Young and Hammon hit a pair of free throws early in the O.T. to make 82-78 and the Silver Stars never trailed in the game.
