Malaysia’s Jiann Shiarng Chiang and Giap Chin Goh have entered into the main round after defeating their respective opponents in the 2011 Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold, at Alor Setar, Malaysia, on Tuesday, May 3. Jiann Shiarng defeated Ka Long NG of Hong
Kong in straight sets, whereas Giap Chin proved his worth against the team-mate, Dede Ryan Philip in a straight-game fight.
Jiann Shiarng opened the game in a defensive way to accommodate himself with the conditions of the court. However, he kept his control over the pace of his rallies. Ka Long kept the pace of the game high and reached 8-8. Both shuttlers were trying to dictate
the pace of the rallies, but nobody was able to take a convincing lead.
At the interval, Jiann Shiarng was just ahead of the opponent at 11-10. After the break, the Malaysian continued his better play and managed to extend his lead at 16-13. Ka Long levelled the score by playing an aggressive game. The score was 20-20, when
Jiann Shiarng took two consecutive points and grabbed the opening set by a 22-20 margin in 23 minutes.
The opening half of second game was also thrilling, where both the shuttlers remained tied at 10-10. The Malaysian accelerated his pace and scored one point to make it an 11-10 lead. After a 60-second rest, Jiann Shiarng stretched the gap by playing a perfect
game and won the set by a 21-16 margin, in just 18 minutes. The ending score of this 41-minute straight-set fight was, 22-20 and 21-16.
In the other Men’s Singles match, Giap Chin tamed Dede Ryan in straight sets. He started the match in a superb way and took only a few minutes to set a good lead of 11-5. After the break, he extended his game by sparing no chance for his opponent and won
the set with a big margin of 21-2, in just 10 minutes.
In the second game, Giap Chin remained ahead of Dede Ryan, proving that he is better from every aspect of the game. He concluded the second game in just 12 minutes by a 21-15 margin. The end score of this 22-minute straight-set match was 21-12 and 21-15.
