Jie Gong triumphs over her rivals in Stockholm: Day two – 2011 FINA World Cup
China’s Jie Gong gave a stunning attempt in the butterfly final heat over her contestants at the 2011 FINA World Cup series, in Stockholm, Sweden, on Sunday, October 16. The session of the meet conducted the Women’s 200m butterfly race.
Gong jumped into the pool in aggressive fashion and thrashed out her contestants, Korea’s Ra Choi Hye and Sweden’s Martina Granstrom by powering the finishing wall with a mouth shattering time of 2 minutes and 03.91 seconds to take Women’s 200m butterfly
title over her competitors.
Hye went to cash on silver medal by hitting the finishing wall with a mark of 2 minutes and 04.24 seconds, while Granstrom picked bronze title in 2 minutes and 05.59 seconds. Meanwhile, Sweden’s athlete, Ida Marko Varga put up an inspiring swim against her
competitors and got the fourth position by posting a time of 2 minutes and 07.54 seconds.
In addition, Zsuzsanna Jakabos of Hungary earned fifth place honours by submitting an impressive time of 2 minutes and 08.13 seconds. Moreover, Sweden’s Petra Granlund captured the attention of Stockholm’s crowd by getting sixth position in the race with
a mark of 2 minutes and 08.67 seconds. Petra was the bronze medallist in 200m butterfly at the 2010 World Championship editions, in Dubai. Additionally, she won gold medal in the respective race at the 2008 European Championships, in Rijeka.
In the meantime, Sweden’s swimmer, Ida Sandin earned seventh place honours by posting a time of 2 minutes and 15.05 seconds. On the other hand, Columbia’s Ebba Rosenquist settled for eighth place with a time of 2 minutes and 16.74 seconds.
Stockholm’s crowd gave a huge ovation to all athletes due to their impressive performances and the best swimmers of the respective race were awarded accolades and cash prizes after the completion of the session.
Russia is scheduled to host the next round of the 2011 FINA World Series in Moscow from October 18-19. The World Series is a pivotal series for all young guns of Sweden and Russia to prepare themselves hard for their upcoming trials of the 2012 London Olympic
Games.
