Jie Zheng breezes past Jarmila Gajdosova into 2nd round – HP Japan Open 2011
The first upset of the day was when Jie Zheng outwitted the fifth seeded Jarmila Gajdosova in the second round of the HP Japan Open 2011. The players drew racquets on the outdoor hard courts of Utsubo Tennis Center in Osaka, Japan.
After one hour and twenty eight minutes the unseeded Chinese (Zheng) flabbergasted the fifth seed in straight sets of 7-5, 6-3 on Wednesday the 12th of October 2011.
The Chinese decided to go first and initiate the initial round of the match. She was unable to hold her serve in the first game but was quick to break back immediately in the second game and equalize the score at 1-1. The two challengers
then held serve for the following two games and once more tied the score at 2-2 by the end of the fourth game.
The scoreboard progressed on even terms from there onward and the old fangled rivals matched a blow for a blow. By the end of the eighth game the score was balanced out at 4-4 and then 5-5 as they again won on alternate service
games. The last two games proved extremely lucky for Zheng as she held serve in the eleventh and in the twelfth benefitted from another break to reel of straight two points and bag the opening set with a 7-5 victory.
Inaugurating the second round of the match was Zheng and this time she again was unable to hold her serve. On the contrary, Gajdosova capitalized from the early break and then held her serve to place herself on the scoreboard with
a mini lead of 2-0. Austrian Gajdosova again broke her adversary in the third game but Zheng made a return breaking her adversary immediately in the following game and the scoreboard shifted to 3-1 with Gajdosova leading.
Zheng was in no mood of losing the competitive edge that she gotten and closed in on the deficit at 3-3 by the end of the sixth game by initially holding her serve and then breaking her adversary. In the following two games she
again repeated the feat and took the lead with a 5-3 score. As she served for the match, she smashed two successive aces and sealed her victory of the set and the match.
The Chinese was able to secure a place in the third round of the event where she will be facing either the fourth seeded Petra Cetkovska or qualifier Erika Sema.
