Jie Zheng dumps Roberta Vinci to cause another major upset in round two – Australian Open 2012
On day four of the Australian Open, second round battle between the two prolific performers, Jie Zheng and Roberta Vinci, ended up in a straight sets upset, as the 38th ranked Chinese, Zheng, ousted the 25th ranked
Italian, Vinci, with the scores of 6-4, 6-2. The Chinese tennis ace is still unbeaten this year and her season opener triumph in Auckland has helped her find the best form of her life.
Not many people turned out to witness the non-Australian encounter but still there was a considerable crowd, mostly cheering for the Chinese tennis ace; probably they wanted to see an upset that always brings greater glory to the
viewers. Both players were locking horns for the third time in their professional career; losing the first match to the Italian in German Open 2004, Zheng had her revenge in the Mercury Insurance Open last year.
A decent start to the match was followed up with some eye-startling display of all-round tennis shots from both players. Five consecutive break serves were shared between the two players in the ratio of 3:2 in favour of the Chinese.
World number 38, Zheng, held her serve in the eighth game to double the lead with scores of 5-3 at that stage. No more breaks were witnessed and the first set was bagged by the inferior ranked contestant.
Trailing one set down, Vinci was limbering up at the sidelines and hinted a comeback to the viewers but her warm-up seemed useless as her performance was below par in the second half of the match. The Chinese tennis ace broke her
rival’s serve in the first game and held her serve to take 2-0 lead upfront. Zheng didn’t looked threaten at all by the sideline aggression of her opponent and replied her with cracking winners down the line in the fifth game to help herself with three games
lead as the scores moved to 4-1. Vinci tried her best to break her opponent’s serve but her dismal returns were not able to threaten Zheng’s lead at all.
Zheng capsizes Vinci and marches into the round three of the tournament.
