Jill Craybas and Maria Elena Camerin progress into the second round of the 2011 Barcelona Ladies Open
World No. 105 Jill Craybas is through to the second round of the 2011 Barcelona Ladies Open after a tense two-set battle with tricky Uzbek Akgul Amanmuradova. The American came out firing breaking her opponent twice to take the match with a 6-3, 6-3 score line.
Craybas was the better player over all, getting the better of an opponent who committed a lot of errors throughout the match. Both players were aggressive in their game but Craybas was slightly more persistent than an up and down Amanmuradova, who promptly hit three double faults to lose her sizeable lead. The American pro completely dominated the match whereas her opponent lacked the intensity to compete with her and couldn’t break back.
The American pro was completely active and played her brand of tennis to clinch a straight sets victory. She eased past her Uzbek opponent with the minimum of fuss winning in just over an hour and twenty minutes. Amanmuradova put 70 percent of first serves into play but only won a meager 53 percent on them whereas Craybas won 67 percent on her first serves, proving herself the stronger player on serves especially in the final set. The American pro was broken three times but she was far more solid than the Uzbek, winning 61 percent of her service points and 50 percent on return.
The American pro will meet either Laura Pous Tio of Spain or Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova of Czech Republic in the second round of the tournament.
In another match during the day Maria Elena Camerin of Italy made short work of Russian Evgeniya Rodina in the first round of the tournament. She defeated her opponent in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 to secure her berth at the second round of the tournament, which is a part of WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) tour.
The Italian scored well behind her first serves with 69 percent of points on them and commanded the majority of rallies, though she did make nine double faults and appeared to struggle with the Russian’s low balls.
The Italian pro was more determined and scored 55 percent of points on her service and 52 percent of points on return. Furthermore she registered 53 percent of points in total to clinch the victory in straight sets.
The Italian pro will face Yaroslava Shvedova in the second round of the tournament. Shvedova edged past Chang Kai-Chen, who was a qualifier at the tournament.
