Jill Craybas cripples Madison Brengle to reach round one – Family Circle Cup 2012
In an all-American duel, qualifying 13th seed Jill Craybas flashed past her compatriot, Madison Brengle, with a breadstick at the Family Circle Cup 2012 on Sunday. She jolted down a 6-3, 6-1 success over the 21-year-old to cruise into the main
draw of this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier event held in Charleston, South Carolina.
Craybas brought her experience into handy and after breaking the youngster’s serve four times, she bagged the match in one hour and 20 minutes. As a result, the 37-year-old confidently advanced into the first round at their home event.
Ranked 137th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Craybas enthusiastically entered the Family Circle Tennis Center and after earning an early break of serve, she jumped to a 4-2 lead. She maintained consistency in her game and not only kept remaining
serves without facing any blockage but capitalised on another break chance in the last game to clinch the opener with a 6-3 score line.
The veteran went out of control in the following set and blasted groundstrokes to wind up the opening five games in a row. Craybas then held her serve once more and pulled out the set with a breadstick.
Summing up the winning American’s performance, Craybas found seven break opportunities and converted four to her advantage. She manifested a lower first serve share of 64 per cent as compared to Brengle’s 78 per cent but magnificently availed 26 out of 35
points on it.
The seventh seed, Karolina Pliskova, will also feature in the main draw. The 20-year-old took down Portuguese rising star, Michelle Larcher De Brito, in straight sets to secure a place in the main draw.
The Czech booming star high-spiritedly stepped on the green clay courts and drew the first blood in the opening game. Despite squandering her lead in the very next game, she capitalised on another break chance in the fifth game, subsequently sealing the
opener by winning six games to four.
Pliskova improved her game in the proceeding set and after warding off all six breakpoints she faced, the Czech plucked her entire serves. She cashed in both break chances to win the set with a 6-2 score line.
