Jill Craybas survives against Sorana Cirstea in final qualies – Cincinnati Open 2011
37-year-old Jill Craybas survived a mid match lapse against the 21-year-old Romanian Sorana Cirstea during the qualifying final on hard courts of Lindner Family Tennis Centre in Mason , Ohio at the Cincinnati Open 2011. Home-girl
Craybas scored 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(3) in two hours, 11 minutes and 42 seconds.
Cirstea won the pitch and opened the set with a wobbly hand and struck one double fault that hit the net, along with, smashing two aces which gained her points whereas, Craybas had a meticulous accuracy and struck no double faults
and hit no aces.
21-year-old Cirstea had 63% of her first serves on target while, Craybas only managed 52% of her first serves on target but because of relatively more points in the second serve, Craybas won 59% of her total service points. Whilst,
Cirstea only bagged a 53% win in the total service points.
Although, Craybas restricted her opponent to just four games, the scores between both the players were very similar with a difference of few points. In the total return points Craybas had 6% more points than Cirstea, who attained
12 out of 29, making it only 41% in her total return points.
Both the players had managed to win 50% of their break points as well as, 50% of break points saved but because of breaking her opponent one more time Craybas won the set as she had gained a competitive edge and accomplished 52%
of her total set points.
The second set saw a reversal of fate and this time Cirstea of was a better player, it seemed she had learnt her lesson and put in a 100% of her effort.
Restricting the home-girl to one game point and being able to save the four break points on her serve, the Romanian won the second set with almost twice as many points as her American opponent, which amassed to 37 out of 61 points,
making it a 61% win in the total set score.
By the third set both the players had bagged a set each and the winner of the third set would secure a berth in the main draw of the event, hence they both were extremely competent and battled it out in the next 50 minutes taking
the set to a tie breaker.
During the tie breaker Craybas’s performance was boosted by the crowd and she managed to break away from her opponent to secure a lead and serve the set by winning the tie breaker at 7-3. Even though, it was a close shave between
the scores of both the players, Craybas won a point more to secure her victory and a place in the main draw of the event.
