I think Jim Brown played 9 years in the 12 game format.   Jim Brown is a lot like Joe Louis, the boxer.   Brown's size and skills exceeded anyone before or since.  I hate stats to rate a player; but, the yards per carry of Brown outpace any runner in the history of the NFL.

Really difficult to answer, but a good question.

Jim Brown is a tad bit before my time, but not Payton.

With the lousy teams he played for and the lousy lines he played behind, I would have to say with what he accomplished despite this, Sweetness has the edge.
