Jim Courier to captain USA in Davis Cup
Jim Courier is to replace Patrick McEnroe as the USA’s Davis Cup captain.
America’s longest serving Davis Cup captain McEnroe ended his 10-year tenure at the helm with a victory against Colombia in the USA’s World Group Play-off during September.
McEnroe was in charge when the USA won a record 32nd Davis Cup crown in 2007, ending a 12-year title drought and finishing his captaincy with a 17-9 win-loss record.
McEnroe had during this year’s US Open announced his intention to quit the post, stating that his decision to step away from the Davis Cup, and the significant time commitment that comes with it, will allow him to focus more on his family and the USTA Player Development program.
Following McEnroe’s announcement, former world No. 1 Courier was quick to put his name forward as a potential candidate and the four-time Grand Slam champion has now been awarded the post.
During his career, Courier played in 26 Davis Cup singles rubbers for his country, winning 16 of them, and was a member of America’s title-winning teams in 1992 (in a formidable line-up that also included John McEnroe, Andre Agassi and Sampras) and 1995, when he was part of the USA team, alongside Sampras and Todd Martin, that defeated Russia 3-2 in the final.
Courier’s first task as Davis Cup captain will be to lead his team to victory in their World Group first round match against Chile in South America next March.
