Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker take revenge from Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell in Saturday foursomes
Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker once again paired together in the Saturday morning foursomes, and defeated Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell in a one-sided match at the Medinah Country Club in Chicago.
Earlier on Friday, both the pairs faced each other in the Ryder Cup’s curtain raiser match. At that time, the Europeans earned the point, when McIlroy and McDowell defeated their US counterparts.
On Saturday, the Americans took revenge by inflicting a 1UP defeat over the same pair.
The Americans dominated the match, right from the beginning of the first hole. Furyk and Snedeker birdied the opening hole and took the advantage early in the day.
Another birdie on the fifth hole stretched their lead to two strokes. The eighth hole witnessed the European players earn the first shot of the day.
However, the scores went 2UP once again, in favour of the US pair, when the Americans birdied the 11th hole. Later in the match, McIlroy and McDowell tried to make a comeback by earning a shot on the 16th hole.
Standing on the 17th green, McIlroy had a great chance of squaring the scores by draining an easy birdie putt. However, luck was not on his side, and the ball slid past the hole.
The last hole of the match witnessed another interesting encounter between both the pairs. After the Europeans finished the hole with a par putt, McIlroy once again had a chance to All-Square the scores with a birdie putt.
However, his attempt for a difficult putt missed the cup and the Americans shook hands with their rivals, with smiles on their faces.
Snedeker was happy to overcome the mistake that he made during the Friday morning foursomes.
His tee shot on the final hole went way right of the fairway, into the trees. As a result, the pair failed to save the par and the Europeans won the hard fought match.
"(Friday) was hard to take, to give away that half-point on 18 the way I drove it," Snedeker said. "But when you've got a partner like Jim, you're never out of it”.
