Jim Furyk and Retief Goosen share the third-round lead at the Transitions Championship – Golf News
The United States’ Jim Furyk fired a five-under par 66 in the third round of the Transitions Championship to share the top position with South African Retief Goosen on Saturday, March 17, 2012.
Furyk had a great start to his round and carded a total of four birdies on the first seven holes that he played.
He added another two on the 12th and 15th to go five-under par. However, a bogey to finish his round forced him to stay at 11-under par overall score.
"I made some birdies out of the rough today, and was able to knock some putts in and keep the round going," Furyk said. "I played very patient, and when I struggled — no putts were going in — I didn't let it bother me".
On the other hand, Goosen played even better, carding a round of six under par 65 with the help of seven birdies and a lone bogey.
Goosen is the same player who decided to take his name out from next week’s tournament when he felt severe pain in his lower back on Friday.
While playing the par-four 16th hole in second round, Goosen felt uncomfortable and made a double bogey.
Right after the round, he announced his withdrawal from the upcoming event to get a complete treatment of his injury.
He astounded his rivals on Saturday with a stunning display of quality game. He was five shots behind the overnight leader, Jason Dufner, who carded a one-under par 71.
"The last three weeks, it's really just started getting bad again," Goosen said about his injury. "So hopefully, I'll be ready to get going again after the Masters — or maybe the Masters, if I play well tomorrow".
The only chance Goosen has of getting his name registered among the participants of the Masters is to record a victory in the Transitions Championship.
Yet, there are a total of 26 players within five strokes of the lead prior to the start of the final round on Sunday.
Therefore, Goosen should remain healthy enough to score another low score that could earn him a victory he desperately needs.
