Jim Furyk misses cut at the Canadian Open
It has been a very surprising Canadian Open so far. There were surprises all around, with the favourites nowhere to be seen on the leaderboard.
Canadian Mike Weir once again failed to make the cut. This season it was his eleventh straight tournament in which he did not make the cut.
At the top, it is the American duo of Scott Piercy and William McGirt who have a one shot lead. Behind them is another American Robert Garrigus.
The big surprise on Friday was that Jim Furyk and Ernie Els both missed the cut. It is hard to believe that Ernie missed the cut after winning the Open. Jim Furyk missing the cut was also a big surprise, he is a two-time winner of the Canadian Open.
Jim’s form had declined since his T4 finish at the US Open, his performance at the Open too was not very commendable.
Probably Jim has not yet recovered from his US Open debacle. He was tied at the top with Webb Simpson but crumbled on the last few holes.
A two-time champion at the Canadian Open, it was expected of him to do well but two consecutive rounds of 70 meant that he missed the cut by just one stroke. The defending champion, Sean O’Hair, also missed the cut by three strokes.
The conditions are pretty wet at the Hamilton Golf Course. In the wet conditions, putts are difficult to make as the greens are very soft, so long putts are extremely difficult. In order to counter that approach shots must be fired near the pin.
"I am not really happy about the ball in hand, but that is the way they like to play it," said HGCC Superintendent Rhod Trainor, who has seen his firm, fast golf course turn into a shooting gallery.
"With the greens soft and receptive, there are not a lot of long putts out there. I think the guys can fire close to the pin".
Wet conditions are not an excuse for the veterans, Ernie and Furyk, to have missed the cut. May be it was extensive travelling in the past month or so that has taken its toll on them.
