Jim Furyk mixes birdies and eagle with bogeys on second day of the Crowne Plaza Invitational
Jim Furyk carded a one-under par 69 in the second round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational to share the 17th spot on the leaderboard while entering the final two rounds at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
Furyk started his round on the back nine of the course and recorded two consecutive birdies on the first two holes he played.
Another birdie on the par-three 13th took him to three-under for the round. However, a bogey on the very next hole put him back on two-under.
The real drama happened on the front nine of the course when he recorded an amazing eagle on the par-five first hole, followed by four bogeys on the next seven holes.
"I did all my scoring early and everything was going pretty much perfect," said Furyk, who is 2 under for the tournament, nine shots back of leader Jason Dufner. "The wind played a factor all day, but it picked up on the second nine”.
"I ran into a couple bad drives," he added. "On No. 3, I had to chip out sideways. Nos. 5 and 8 were two tough holes today".
Furyk has a decent past record at Colonial, as he recorded a total of six top-10 finishes in 17 appearances he made so far, including two runner-up finishes in 1998 and 2007.
He believes that the winds really affected his play on the front nine of the course and he failed to make the correct calculations for making the right shots.
Yet, he admitted that the tournament officials have done a great job by softening the greens to offset the effect of strong winds blowing across the course.
"If this place browns out and you get the ball running down the fairways," Furyk said, "and if the greens get firmer and faster, you'll see scoring go up".
One of the interesting facts of Furyk’s performance on Friday was that he missed the greens on the 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 8th hole and all of them converted to bogeys.
He is currently nine strokes behind the halfway leader, Jason Dufner who recorded five-under and six-under in the opening two rounds.
