Jim Furyk ready to put up a strong defence of Transitions Championship in Tampa – Golf News
Jim Furyk is eyeing a victory at the Transitions Championship, which will take place at the Copperhead course of Innisbrook Resort in Tampa Bay from 17 to 20 March.
Furyk won last year’s event at the same course and pocketed the $972,000 prize money when he defeated K.J. Choi by a margin of one stroke. It was the same venue where the American ended his 32-month dry spell without a victory on the Professional Golf Association
tour.
The 12th seed of the world is once again confident to take charge of the field. He talked about this in a press conference held in Palm Harbor on Wednesday. The player has been going through some problems and he is not enjoying the game, the way
he did in his early days. However, after a lot of counselling, the American is ready to put up a strong defence of his title.
Furyk discussed his past fears in the conference and said, “I played junior tournaments here and I always thought it was very difficult and tough.”
However, after winning the last years’ event, Furyk has thrown all his fears away and has opted for a new strategy, which allows him to enjoy the game, while playing it. He explained, “I made it a point that I was going to have fun out here, whether it was
on the golf course or off the golf course. I went to concerts, went to ballgames … I was thinking, 'I'm just going to have fun. I'm tired of beating my head against the wall and I'm going to enjoy it.”
The 40-year-old also disclosed a swing change, which he made in his game recently. He said that he was struggling in the last year and that was affecting his game negatively. However, by the end of 2010, when he failed to make it in the Ryder Cup, he decided
to bring a change, which eventually reflected in his game.
Furyk who is ranked fourth in the tour money list will be competing against the top guns of the world, which includes world number one Martin Kaymer and world number two Lee Westwood.
