Jim Goldie longing for Ayr Gold Cup while Hawkeyethenoo is set to make history at the race
Hawkeyethenoo is set to become the first horse to be trained by a Scottish trainer that may win the Ayr Gold Cup since 1975. Ayr Gold Cup is Europe’s richest sprint handicap race and numerous horses have tried their luck to win this event but most of them have been unsuccessful in winning it since 35 years. The last Scottish trained horse to have won this handicap was Nigel Angus which was trained by Roman Warrior.
This year, trainer Jim Goldie has his hopes high that his horse will do a great job at the Ayr Gold and has already booked jockey Kieren Fallon for the 8-1 shot. The handicap race will take place on the 18th of September on Saturday. Trainer Jim Goldie is enthusiastically looking forward to the race as he says that this time round, lady luck will be on his side. The trainer is very confident that Hawkeyethenoo will make history on this race track come race day.
Talking to correspondents about his most celebrated horse, Goldie opined that he has trained the colt for the big day. He further revealed that the horse’s name had a spiritual meaning and so he is hoping that it will prove lucky for its athletic endeavours.
He further added that having Kieren as a jockey is a bonus for him and his horse. Goldie said that it was about time for a Scottish trained horse to win the Ayr Gold since no victory at this event is now becoming a disturbance for the Scottish trainers. Moreover he said that he was tired of being accused of doing nothing noteworthy. Furthermore, he said that their victory in this event will be a shut up call for all those who say that Scottish trainers and horses do not have the talent and potential.
From the 10 starts that Hawkeyethenoo has made, the horse has gone on to win five of the meets, since he has been associated with Goldie. The race horse has been under Goldie’s training for over a year now. The colt did not qualify to run at the Steward’s Cup which took place at Glorious Goodwood. However, he did win the meets at Newmarket and York. Hawkeyethenoo was not very lucky at the track on the Derby Day at Epsom, when he lost the event.
Goldie was recorded as saying that he did not perform well and he definitely needs to improve on his timings and his runs. He further said that as a trainer, he has worked very hard with the colt and that he is now in the perfect condition to run for the Ayr Gold. The trainer confessed that there is still room for improvement in the race horse’s performance and that he is focusing on that. Goldie said that Hawkeyethenoo is a good runner and he has now put Epsom behind him and moved on with the upcoming races, because the defeat on the Derby Day was nobody’s fault.
The ownership of Hawkeyethenoo is shared by Forbes Connor and Geordie Graham Smith. Goldie confessed that Connor had suggested the horse’s name. Connor is the owner of the biggest paper and plastic recycling firm in Scotland. The firm is known as Stirling Fibre. He added that this name will be written on the thousands of betting slips that will be sold before the race on Saturday.
Ayr Gold Cup is also known as the William Hill Gold Cup and is a race run in Scotland on a flat surfaced track and thoroughbreds aged three years and above can compete in the race. The race is run at Ayr and the horses have to cover a total distance of 6 furlongs. The race takes place in September every year.
The race was initiated in 1804 and was initially restricted to just Scottish trained thoroughbreds. The event became a handicap race in the year 1855 and is so far the richest sprint handicap run in Europe. The current sponsor of the race is William Hill.
