Jim Leyland enjoying his time in Detroit – MLB Detroit Tigers News
Detroit Tigers’ Manager Jim Leyland is an extremely experienced manager. He started his career as a Minor League baseball player. Things did not work out for him as a player so he decided to change his profession.
Leyland then worked as a coach for Tigers’ Minor League system for 11 years. In 1982, he moved to Chicago to work as third base coach for the White Sox. Since then, Leyland has managed several Major League Baseball teams.
In his seven years tenure with the Tigers so far, Leyland has given some impressive results. He has helped the Tigers reach the World Series finals twice in last seven years. However, this season it seems the Tigers have their best chance of becoming the
champions this season.
"I think his biggest strength is the trust and respect he earns with players over the years. Jim is a very unique personality. He's so competitive. But he does it the right way. He has this incredible way to present things," said Tony La Russa, now an MLB
executive. "He's so consistently sincere, and he's never had a bad day that way."
"He gets out of his players what he should get out of them. That's what it is. And everyone likes playing for Jimmy Leyland. I haven't heard anyone in my life say he didn't like Jim Leyland,” said Don Zimmer.
With Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, Delmon Young and Brennan Boesch in their batting line-up, Tigers’ offence has looked in top form in the post-season.
They also have the best pitching rotation in the American League. Justin Verlander, Anibal Sanchez, Doug Fister and Max Scherzer produced magical performances to floor the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series.
If the Tigers can somehow win four of their next seven games, they will bring the World Series trophy back to Detroit after nearly 30-years.
There were rumours that Leyland might return to his home town in Pittsburgh at the end of the season. However, after leading the Tigers to World Series glory, surely he will be looking to extend his stay in Detroit for few more years.
