Jim Leyland overjoyed as Detroit Tigers humiliate Chicago White Sox 18-2 – MLB Update
Manager Jim Leyland of the Detroit Tigers was more than happy on Sunday when he saw his squad obliterate the Chicago White Sox pitching rotation. The skipper witnessed his hitters amass 18 runs against a good team that had Mark Buehrle start on the mound.
Much to the appreciation of the gaffer, Max Scherzer gave nothing away in his starting role for the Detroit team. The bullpen conceded two runs but that was nothing compared to the damage inflicted on the opposition.
The Tigers had won their two previous encounters against the White Sox and Leyland suspected that an emotional walk off victory on Saturday would influence the team negatively in the third game. Fortunately for him, that was not the case.
"The guys were ready to play," Leyland remarked, after the game. "It was one of those freak things. It's really not the kind of game you want to see at the Major League level. It was a game where if we hit the ball hard, it would fall in and if we hit the
ball soft, it fell in."
Magglio Ordonez, Ramon Santiago and Jhonny Peralta snatched up a run, each. On the other hand, Delmon Young, Andy Dirks, Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez, Brandon Inge and Alex Avila picked up two runs each. The noticeable figure in the line-up was none other
than Austin Jackson. The strong man smashed two hits and scored thrice. His batting average has risen up to .261 and the skipper is keen to develop his swing.
"He's staying better through the strike zone and staying aggressive," Jim Leyland said of Austin Jackson. "We've talked about concentrating on having him swing when he's ready and to swing at strikes. We don't want him to worry about working the pitcher."
Leyland’s hitters seem to be getting into swing. Inge has the lowest batting average, compared to the rest of the squad. His contribution included a RBI, two runs and three hits. If there is one team ready to go to the post season, it surely has to be the
Detroit Tigers.
