Jim McDonnell believes James DeGale could end George Groves’ career – Boxing news
Top trainer Jim McDonnell has warned George Groves that James DeGale can end his boxing career.
He also believes that Groves is being sacrificed by promoter David Haye.
Both former amateur rivals, James DeGale and George Groves, will be at each other’s throats on May 21, 2011 at the O2 Arena in London.
McDonnell told the media that everyone is talking about the upcoming world title fight these days between David Haye and Wladimir Klitschko, which is going to be staged at Imtech Arena, Hamburg.
“Everyone has forgotten about George Groves, but he needs to get used to it because everyone will forget about him after next Saturday. Despite constantly going on about him and wanting to fight like him, Groves plays second fiddle to David Haye, and he'll
play second fiddle to DeGale. This fight is going to be all about James DeGale, not George Groves, said McDonnell,” he said.
The trainer also added that there is no room for mercy when it comes to boxing. Moreover, he stated he warned Groves to pull out before time but he did not listen.
He said, “I told Groves to pull out when the fight was first announced, but he wouldn't listen. Groves is going to get badly exposed at the O2, and it could effectively end his career. It's going to be a long way back for him after what James will do to
him. People in his own camp have been telling me they don't fancy the fight.”
Jim McDonnell, who has also trained a lot of world class boxers including the likes of Herbie Hide and Danny Williams, showed his level of certainty by urging Adam Booth and David Haye to apologise to Grove after his career gets ended.
Though he admitted the fact that Grove is going to be paid a lot of money for the fight, on the same note he claimed it will be the last payday of Grove’s career.
Groves, who is an English professional boxer, is a former amateur champion and the reigning Commonwealth super middleweight champion. He is currently managed and trained by David ‘The Hayemaker’ Haye. However, James ‘Chunky’ DeGale, on the same note is an
Olympic gold medallist.
