Question:

Jim Morrison- Greek Translation?

I was asked to do a project on influential music artists for my AP music theory class. I decided to do Jim Morrison from the Doors. I was researching his death and this: ΚΑΤΑ ΤΟΝ ΔΑΙΜΟΝΑ ΕΑΥΤΟΥ. is on his gravestone. I tried to find a translation, but nothing is coming up right. Does anyone know what it means?

  1. It can translate into two things. One is "old" Greek while one is "modern" Greek, you may want to check up on that though because I know nothing about Greek.

Anyway, I am pretty sure it is the old Greek that translates into, "True to his own spirit" (there are a few different variations because of translating differences)

And I think it is the modern Greek that translates into (roughly) "Killed by his own demons" <<I didn't make that up either ;)

These are the tow translations regardless. I am not quite sure whether I switched the modern and ancient or not, however I believe what I put is the correct order.

There is always room for miscommunication in translating different languages into English since a word can have multiple meanings, but these are the general meaning of each.
