Jim Thome helps Baltimore Orioles beat Boston Red Sox 9-6 – MLB Update
Baltimore Orioles kept their playoffs hopes alive as they beat the Boston Red Sox 9-6 at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on Saturday, September 22 in second game of their three match series.
Starting pitcher Randy Wolf had a decent outing as he gave up seven hits and three runs in five innings to keep Orioles in the game. Relief pitcher Tommy Hunter grabbed his sixth win of the season after pitching the perfect 11th. Closer Jim Johnson
earned his 47th save of the year, tossing up the scoreless 12th.
Adam Jones secured an RBI groundout to shortstop in the first inning to put Orioles on the board. Rookie Manny Machado singled to centre and Mark Reynolds smacked a home-run to left in the fourth to give Orioles’ a vital 3-1 lead.
Red Sox came back strongly to take the game into the extra inning. Jim Thome broke the tie with a ground rule double to deep right. Endy Chavez and Machado drove in crucial runs to give Orioles a much needed victory.
"This situation is not new to him," said Adam Jones. "He's missed some time, but stepping into that box ... he always rises to the occasion."
"These guys have been playing very well and to come in and get a big hit like that is big," he said. "You want to be a part of what they're doing and I think that's what makes you work hard when you're down (in the minors) because you really don't know when
you're on rehab how the process is going to go. So being here and being in this atmosphere."
Orioles edged past the Red Sox 4-2 in series opener and they continued to find winning ways to take a decisive 2-0 series lead. If Baltimore fail to reclaim their number one status on the American League East Division standings table, their best chance of
making it to the playoffs will be to grab one of the AL Wild Card spots.
Throughout the season, the Orioles have shown that they are capable of beating the best in the business. It will be interesting to see if they can continue the good work over the next few days to break their 15 seasons losing streak.
