Jim Thome returns to fulfil World Series Championship dream for Philadelphia Phillies - MLB
Making to the list of eight players with home-runs exceeding the 600 mark and becoming the second among the active hitters along with Alex Rodriguez, Jim Thome bags something to his name that he can always cherish. Still however winning a World Series ring
for the 41-year-old veteran remains a dream, one he is h**l-bent to achieve this season.
Disregarding $1.25 million, an amount that looks pittance when compared to the one he will get in his high-days, he asserts gaining the ring is more important than money.
"I think that's everybody's dream," said Thome. "I think there a lot of guys in here who would put individual things aside to get that."
Getting hurt after having a dream 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons for Phillies when he hit 47 and 42 home-runs respectively halted his progress, resulting in Ryan Howard taking his role. Auspiciously for Thome though that he is now back, filling the vacuum left
by Achilles tendon injury of Ryan Howard.
Who knows, his gratuitous (after all he is into his 40s and club is looking for young arms) entry to the side proves great for Phillies and he goes on to steer the side to big moments. One can anytime expect him rejuvenated and hitting the ball all across
the park, an ability he manifested so often in his glorious career.
Bordering on his demise after consummating all the highs a player can think of, Thome has still left a stimulus instigating him and that is basking in the glory of a World Series win. Because of the same reason, he has endured to prolong his already exhausted
career.
“I do love the game," he said. "But I think the opportunity to get a ring, yes, that's probably the biggest. They ... we ... are good, and to be able to put yourself in that position is pretty special."
Disheartening to Thome may be the fact that Phillies’ management is growing increasingly concerned about their ageing lot, with Thome at 41, Chase Utley at 33, Jimmy Rollins 33 at shortstop and Carlos Ruiz the catcher at age 33.
"Look," said Thome, "I get the fact that you can't play forever. If this is my last year, I'm going to go out and just enjoy the game."
His age apart, the club can look forward to his hunger for showing a stunning performance which remains as unquenched as ever.
