  1. tunney easily outpoints bivins

  2. Wow, Zebbie. . . .interesting matchups this morning!

Gene Tunney was great, in that he was a mechanical fighting machine.  His destruction of Dempsey is a crowning achievement that no one else can really claim.

Jimmy Bivins was "interim" heavyweight champion when Big Red (Joe Louis) was enlisted to the army, fighting exhibitions for the troops.  Bivins was cagy, strong, and rather defense-minded, but he holds wins over impressive opposition.

I just don't see Bivins beating the Dempsey-killer, though.

Tunney would win a unanimous decision.

  3. Bivins had a few good wins early in his career including over Ezzard Charles who he knocked down 7 times in their first fight, including 4 nine counts and a KO over Archie Moore in their first fight. But both Charles and Moore avenged these defeats and Bivins ended with quite a few defeats by the big names of the time on his record.

Tunney on the other hand retired as champion after beating one of the all time greats (Dempsey) twice and defending the title one further time. He retired with just one defeat, against Harry Greb, which he avenged twice.

I see this as an easy win for Tunney, either a unanimous decision or a late KO/TKO after he wears Bivins down.
