Jimmy Gopperth is a loyal Falcon – Rugby News Update
Jimmy Gopperth, the 28-year-old fly-half is happy being at Newcastle even if they get relegated from the Aviva Premiership and have to play in the Championship next season.
Gopperth, a two time winner of the Golden Boot who put pen to paper on a three year deal with Newcastle Falcons in February this year, spoke about the offers he had.
"As soon as money came into the game loyalty went out of the window," Gopperth told the
Times. "I was overwhelmed by the amount of offers. I had some sleepless nights, but I looked at the bigger picture and saw something you can really fight for.”
The Kiwi fly-half is certain that the Falcons will be playing in the Champions next season unless they can make a remarkable turnaround in the last game of the season, which sees them travelling to the London Wasps this Saturday. They lay four points of
the Wasps, and they need to achieve a bonus point at Adams Park while restricting the home side to minimum points.
He is optimistic about the club and speaking ahead of the game, he said, "Regardless of what happens, the club is in a great position and with Semore and Dean in control, it is only going to get better.”
Newcastle Falcons has seen many players leave the exit door in recent seasons. This includes the likes of Kieran Brookes, Micky Young, Mathew Tait, Toby Flood, Jamie Noon, Tom May, Phil Dowson, David Wilson and Jonny Wilkinson. However, there is a change
in the air at Kingston Park.
The Falcons confirmed in mid march that Dean Richards will take over as Director of Rugby even if Newcastle gets relegated. Citing his reasons to join the club, Richards said that the Falcons enjoy massive fan support, and he loves the ambition of Semore
Kurdi for the club. Richards meeting with Kurdi was the deal clincher.
When he signed a three-year contract extension, Gopperth said, "Furthermore I very much want to be part of what I believe is going to be an amazing journey here at Newcastle.”
The rebuilding has begun at Newcastle whether they avoid relegation or not.
